The M-345 is to replace the MB-339 in service. It was designed as a cheap to buy and operate, but still a jet, training aircraft for the second and third stages of training combat jet pilots. It is therefore an aircraft that a pilot boards after initial training, but before he begins flying advanced training aircraft (in the case of Italy, the M-346 Master).
