It turns out that Russia approached Türkiye nearly a century ago to combat a rat infestation. According to a 1923 newspaper archive, Russian merchants, wanting to fight rats that were infesting ports and grain warehouses, wanted to buy 10,000 cats from Erzurum, Kars, and Sarıkamış.
It has emerged that approximately 103 years ago, Russian merchants took action to purchase 10,000 cats from the Eastern Anatolia region to combat rat infestations in ports and granaries.
Taner Özdemir's archival work revealed in the Sarıkamış Varlık Newspaper of August 9, 1923 that Russian traders wanted to buy 10,000 cats. It was planned to supply cats from different regions of Kars, Sarıkamış and Eastern Anatolia, especially Erzurum.
