Israel's election authorities voted today to ban the largest Arab parties from the October parliamentary elections, but the decision must also be approved by the judiciary. The central election committee, convened by members of the ruling coalition, decided to disqualify the United Arab List as well as the Unified List (a coalition of several Arab left-wing parties). The votes were broadcast on the Knesset channel.
In Israel, about 20 percent of the population is of Palestinian descent. Politically, they are mainly represented by the Arab parties in the Knesset - but their participation in the election at the end of October is now on the brink.
