Islamic State supporters guilty of planning 'most deadly' gun attack on Jewish targets in Manchester
Two men convicted of planning a gun attack targeting Jewish gatherings with AK-47s and 1,200 rounds of ammunition in Manchester, foiled by undercover police after a two-year probe.
- On Tuesday a jury at Preston Crown Court found Walid Saadaoui, 38, and Amar Hussein, 52, guilty of plotting a deadly gun attack on Manchester's Jewish community.
- Using proceeds from a property sale, Walid Saadaoui funded the plot, paying 5,000 as an initial payment for weapons in revenge for Israeli actions in Gaza, prosecutors said.
- MI5 opened Operation Catogenic and placed Saadaoui under surveillance before undercover officer Farouk arranged meetings and a weapons handover with police-supplied deactivated guns from a rented Lexus boot.
- The undercover officer Farouk warned the suspects would `kill a lot of people`, and Bilel Saadaoui, 36, was convicted of failing to disclose information about the plot, which Greater Manchester Police called `the deadliest terrorist attack in UK history`.
- He joined a Manchester Jewish Community Facebook group to stalk targets, used beekeeping and goldfinch 'Barry' as coded language for weapons and ammunition, and planned smuggling via ferry through Dover/White Cliffs.
