Isabella Rossellini Gets Emotional as Locarno Film Festival Honours Her with Excellence Award
Rossellini was honored for her film legacy as the festival opened with a refugee drama about a child facing deportation and a brother’s mysterious sleep.
- On Wednesday, the 79th Locarno Film Festival honored Italian-American actress Isabella Rossellini with its Excellence Award at the Piazza Grande in Switzerland, where Festival President Maja Hoffmann called her presence a "good omen" for the edition.
- Rossellini expressed deep emotion joining her father, director Roberto Rossellini, and brother, producer Renzo Rossellini, as festival honorees. Her father won the Great Prize in 1948 for "Germania Anno Zero"; Renzo received the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023.
- Following the ceremony, the festival premiered the refugee drama "The Green Eyes," directed by Fanny Liatard and Jérémy Trouilh. The film follows 11-year-old Chaya and her family in France's Landes region facing deportation, with her brother Nour falling into a mysterious sleep.
- Co-Director Liatard explained the film was inspired by major forest fires in the Landes region. She stated the team "wanted to try to put faces to stories that are sometimes a bit dehumanised, or just numbers."
- The festival continues through August 15, featuring an "In Conversation" event with Rossellini on Thursday where she will present her web series "Green Porno," exploring animal mating rituals through her fascination with biology.
