Target Taps Designer Isaac Mizrahi for New Role as Creative Director at Large
Isaac Mizrahi will advise Target’s design teams and mentor talent as the retailer expands his role beyond fashion into marketing and storytelling.
On Monday, Target named Isaac Mizrahi as creative director at large, marking a homecoming for the designer who pioneered the retailer's high-low fashion collaborations starting in 2002.
Bringing Mizrahi back is part of Target's effort to turn around sales under CEO Michael Fiddelke, who took the helm in February promising more style savvy to reclaim the retailer's reputation.
Working closely with Gena Fox, Target's SVP of design, Mizrahi will mentor talent and advise on product innovation without designing directly, providing an external perspective on trends and creativity.
The appointment reflects a broader trend of mass retailers hiring elevated design talent; Zara, Gap Inc, and Uniqlo have made similar moves to formalize designer-retailer relationships beyond one-off collaborations.
Mizrahi believes "great design should belong to everybody," arguing consumers need not spend $8,000 on a sweater when quality options cost $45, positioning Target as the design authority.
