World Cup Digest: Tech Issue Caused VAR Confusion
FIFA said the outage did not affect the penalty decision, and Switzerland’s 14th-minute spot kick stood after normal VAR checks.
FIFA reported a "brief technical outage" during the Video Assistant Referee process in Saturday's World Cup match between Switzerland and Qatar at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium in Santa Clara.
Switzerland received a penalty in the 14th minute after Remo Freuler was brought down in the box by Qatar goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada, triggering the VAR review process.
Although the VAR workflow functioned normally to check for offsides, the outage prevented an onside animation graphic from generating during the penalty review that upheld the on-field decision.
Breel Embolo scored from the penalty to give Switzerland the lead, though a late own goal by Miro Muheim ultimately handed Qatar an equalizing point.
FIFA confirmed the technical issue was "quickly resolved" and did not affect the match outcome or the integrity of the officiating procedures.
In a press statement, the International Football Association Board announced that there were technical errors with the VAR room during the Group B match between Qatar and Switzerland.
