Pakistan Receives 22 Iranian Sailors Intercepted by US, Coordinates Return to Tehran
Pakistan said the 22 crew members were the fourth group repatriated in two months, bringing its total assistance to more than 70 Iranians.
On Friday, 22 Iranian crew members from the vessel Lenore/Davina arrived safely in Karachi after their recent interdiction by United States authorities, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar announced.
American forces boarded the vessel during heightened Gulf tensions after the United States imposed a naval blockade on Iranian oil shipments following hostilities that began on February 28.
Pakistan has now facilitated the repatriation of more than 70 Iranian nationals through its territory, with this arrival marking the fourth group of crew members assisted by the country in the past two months.
On Saturday, DPM Dar held a telephone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who appreciated Pakistan's support in advancing the peace process and facilitating the crew's safe return.
The June 18 Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding includes provisions for lifting the naval blockade, which officials described as a "confidence-building measure" between Washington and Tehran.
