Iran Executes Man for Alleged Spying for Israel; Activists Say He Was Tortured Into False Confession
- On Wednesday, Iran executed Babak Shahbazi, accusing him of spying for Israel, amid an intensified campaign targeting alleged spies after a recent short conflict with Israel.
- Shahbazi was arrested after sending a letter to Ukrainian President Zelenskyy offering assistance against Russia, but activists maintain he was pressured to admit to crimes he did not commit.
- The judiciary accused Shahbazi of passing critical details about Iran’s data centers to Israeli operatives, while officials did not specify how he was executed.
- Since the 12-day conflict marked by Israeli airstrikes that resulted in over 1,100 deaths, including top military leaders, Iran has put to death at least eight individuals accused of spying, leading to concerns about an intensified crackdown.
- Human rights groups warn these executions may signal a wider politically motivated crackdown amid ongoing human rights abuses in Iran.
