'Potential Fraud' Investigated at Closed PM Law Firm
The Solicitors Regulation Authority is probing possible client money misappropriation after PM Law Group's Butterworths branches closed, with over 80 compensation claims filed.
- On Monday , the SRA confirmed its investigation uncovered potential fraud, including misappropriation of client money, and handed information to police.
- Butterworths Solicitors branches in Carlisle, Penrith, Whitehaven and Kendal suddenly closed on February 2, prompting PM Law Group to notify the Solicitors Regulation Authority, which intervened on February 4; by February 9, Gordons LLP was assisting the SRA and had taken possession of files and money.
- PM Law employed more than 600 people and hundreds of staff were left without work after the firm shut, while the SRA contacted over 100 clients and issued emergency grants.
- The SRA emphasized investigators aim to establish what occurred, how it happened, and who was responsible, and said they will take enforcement action against anyone involved in misconduct.
- Clients unable to access funds can apply to the SRA compensation fund, and Gordons LLP and the SRA have published guidance and support on their websites.
