Intuitive Machines to Acquire Goonhilly Earth Station and COMSAT
The purchase adds 44 antennas and COMSAT teleports, strengthening Intuitive Machines’ lunar communications network and expanding access to NASA and European Space Agency work.
On Thursday, Intuitive Machines agreed to acquire Goonhilly Earth Station Ltd. and its American subsidiary COMSAT for $49.6 million, combining ground station operations across the United States and United Kingdom.
Chief Executive Steve Altemus noted Goonhilly was an "instrumental" partner in the IM-1 and IM-2 lunar missions, prompting the acquisition to integrate it as the leader of the company's global ground segment.
The acquisition adds 44 antennas to Intuitive's network, including 30- and 32-meter dishes in Cornwall, England, which Altemus estimated generates about $14 million in annual revenue.
Pending regulatory approvals in both nations, the deal is expected to close in the third quarter while Goonhilly remains based in Cornwall, a move Space Minister Liz Lloyd called "world-class capabilities."
Altemus indicated the U.K. presence enables pursuit of European Space Agency contracts, positioning the expanded network to support customer needs for Moon base and deep space operations.
