Internet and cell service restored after another cable theft attempt
TELUS said a 102% rise in thefts this year has driven repeated cable damage that disrupts critical services across the region.
- On Sunday, thieves intentionally cut TELUS fibre cables near Mount Hayes on Highway 16, disrupting internet, television, and phone services across northwest B.C. from Fraser Lake to Prince Rupert.
- TELUS reported a 102% surge in thefts year-over-year in 2026, as thieves targeting copper cables often sever nearby fibre lines, disrupting critical services for residents across the region.
- "Emergency Roaming has been activated," the company stated, to provide wireless support for restoring basic voice calls and messaging services via an alternate carrier network for impacted communities.
- By approximately 10 p.m. Sunday, crews restored the vast majority of internet and wireless services, though technicians continue working to resolve intermittent landline issues persisting in Fraser Lake.
- Working with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police , TELUS has installed security cameras, alarms, and custom barriers to deter future vandalism and combat the recurring theft threat.
