A new study found students gained nearly a month of math learning and 2 1/2 weeks in English language arts on average.
- Standardized assessments show over 39,000 students in Summer Boost gained nearly a month more learning in math and 2 1/2 extra weeks in English language arts, according to a new study led by Arizona State University researcher Geoffrey Borman.
- Bloomberg Philanthropies, founded by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, launched Summer Boost in 2022 to help students recover from academic decline during the COVID-19 pandemic. The program has since expanded to seven cities.
- At Legacy Prep in Birmingham, Alabama, head Reneta Johnson used a $200,000 Bloomberg grant to hire 12 teachers, enabling the elementary school to improve from a D to a B grade on state report cards.
- Borman noted that results were weaker when class sizes exceeded 21 students, while consistent attendance of at least 70% is required for funding. Phonics-based instruction also contributed to gains.
- With federal relief funding lapsing, sustainability poses a challenge, noted Harvard University researcher Thomas Kane. He suggested new federal education tax credits and nonprofit scholarship groups could support future programming.
