Man Charged over Bondi Beach Terror Attack
The attack on a Jewish Hanukkah event left at least 15 dead and 25 injured, with two suspects in custody as police classify it as an antisemitic terrorist act.
- On Sunday evening, a mass shooting at the Chanukah by the Sea event in Archer Park, Bondi Beach killed 15 people and targeted Sydney's Jewish community as emergency services responded at 6.43pm.
- With more than 1,000 people at Archer Park, Sajid Akram, 50, and Naveed Akram, 24, left Campsie around 5.15pm before arriving in Bondi and taking position on a pedestrian bridge overlooking the event.
- The father-and-son duo opened fire from a pedestrian bridge, NSW Police engaged them, killing Sajid Akram and hospitalising Naveed Akram under police guard; bystander Ahmed el Ahmed tackled an attacker and was wounded.
- NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon designated the incident a terrorist attack, while Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the scenes `shocking and distressing`; authorities urged affected people to contact Lifeline Australia or Kids Helpline and appealed for blood donations.
- As of this morning, 10 victims remain in critical condition and six are yet to be formally identified, while public fundraising surged close to $2m for a Bondi hero and public figures like Hugh Jackman expressed devastation.
