- Four university students died in a car crash on February 1 in Magdalen Street, Colchester, when their Ford Focus crashed into a building.
- The driver, Makyle Bayley, was over 2.5 times the drink-drive limit and lost control while travelling about 94mph in a 30mph zone.
- The vehicle hit a small island, crossed the opposite carriageway and footpath, struck steps, then collided roof-first into the building, killing all occupants at the scene.
- Coroner Lincoln Brookes stated the medical causes of death were severe traumatic head injuries for Bayley and Darold-Tchikaya and multiple injuries for Wol and Hibbert.
- The incident ended the lives of four students who had met for a typical night out, highlighting risks of speeding and drink driving on road safety.
