Belgium's consumer price inflation accelerated further in September to the highest level in more than three years amid soaring energy costs. The consumer price index climbed 4.69 percent year-over-year in September, faster than the 3.97 percent rise in August. Inflation based on energy quickened to 24.4 percent from 16.5 percent, led by 33.9 percent surge in motor fuel costs.
Inflation rises further this month to 4.69 percent, coming close to the 5 percent mark. Notably, the health index, on which wages are adjusted, remains stuck at 4 percent. “As a result, wages are rising less rapidly than the cost of living, and the average family is losing purchasing power,” says Professor of Labour Economics Stijn Baert (UGent).
