Indonesian rescuers search for survivors as the death toll from floods and landslides rises to 279

Rescuers face challenges reaching isolated areas while over 75,000 people have been displaced and more than 500 injured, Indonesia's disaster agency reported.

  • On Saturday, Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency said confirmed casualties reached 248, with more than 100 people still missing as rescue workers continue searching Sumatra.
  • Torrential monsoon rains and a rare tropical storm in the Malacca Strait triggered widespread flooding, while a magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck Sumatra, compounding the damage.
  • Rescue teams struggled as damaged roads, collapsed bridges, downed communications and a shortage of heavy moving equipment blocked access, while police, soldiers and local residents dug through mud by hand and relief aircraft delivered supplies to Central Tapanuli, North Sumatra.
  • A total of 75,219 people have been displaced in West Sumatra, with 106,806 affected, and more than 500 injured across the region, officials said.
  • Aceh Gov. Muzakir Manaf declared a state of emergency until Dec. 11 and authorities used cloud seeding while images of logs on Air Tawar Beach raised concerns about illegal logging.
