Indonesia Appoints New Disaster Agency Head in President Prabowo's Third Reshuffle in a Month
- On Thursday, October 15, 2026, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto appointed Lieutenant General Kristomei Sianturi as the new National Disaster Mitigation Agency chief, replacing Suharyanto.
- The leadership change follows the Corruption Eradication Commission arresting five individuals on Wednesday, including Suharyanto's brother, for alleged corruption involving emergency relief funds.
- Investigators seized about 3.3 billion rupiah in cash, gold, and cryptocurrency during raids, probing collusion in procuring emergency goods funded by the agency's 4.62 trillion rupiah budget.
- Analysts suggest the appointment aims to restore public confidence amid scrutiny regarding the government's handling of forest fires, which have affected neighboring Singapore and Malaysia.
- With wildfires intensifying, the government has deployed about 70,000 personnel to contain the blazes, while regional concern grows over transboundary haze affecting countries in South-east Asia.
