Indonesia investigates radioactive contamination in some exports to US and Europe

The probe targets a China-owned smelting factory amid recalls of shrimp, spices, and sneakers, with nine workers exposed and no acute health risk reported by the U.S. FDA.

  • On Wednesday, Indonesia opened a criminal investigation after radioactive contamination forced recalls of shrimp, spices and sneakers bound for the United States and the Netherlands, police investigators formally launched the probe, task-force spokesperson Bara Hasibuan said.
  • Investigators say the suspected source is a metal-processing plant at Cikande Industrial Estate, Banten province, Java, where PT Peter Metal Technology's management returned to China, Setia Diarta said earlier this month.
  • Earlier this year Dutch authorities reported traces of cesium 137, and inspections found contaminated boxes of sneakers and zinc powder containers.
  • Authorities have decontaminated sites and barred contaminated goods from entry, affecting around 20 factories in the Cikande industrial estate and nine employees treated at a government hospital in Jakarta.
  • Authorities are holding contaminated containers pending re-export while the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said detected levels posed no acute health risk but noted long-term exposure concerns.
