Project Cheetah in India has successfully reintroduced cheetahs, reaching a population of 52. Thirty-two cheetahs were born in the country, marking a significant breeding success. Cheetahs have expanded from Kuno National Park to Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary. The program aims to establish a comprehensive, long-term cheetah meta-population across India. Future plans involve expanding suitable habitats and strengthening the international cheetah base.
With the completion of four years of Project Cheetah, the number of cheetahs in India has increased to 52. Of these, 32 are indigenously born. The project, which began with eight cheetahs imported from Namibia on September 17, 2022, has now expanded the range of cheetahs to the Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary in addition to Kuno National Park.
