LIST: Resources, Ways to Help Those Impacted by Indiana's Historic Flooding Emergency
Relief groups are collecting donations and volunteers as federal aid could bring up to $5 million for response costs, Gov. Mike Braun said.
Gov. Mike Braun announced that President Donald Trump intends to approve a Presidential Emergency Declaration, providing up to $5 million in federal assistance for hundreds of Hoosiers displaced by flooding in Central Indiana.
Floodwaters from the Whitewater River caused severe damage to homes and businesses in Metamora and Laurel, a community ten miles north. For 82-year-old Dean Peercy, the destruction is unlike anything experienced in 83 years.
The Indiana Fever, Indiana Pacers, Noblesville Boom, and Indianapolis Colts donated $250,000 to the American Red Cross. The Indianapolis Foundation launched the Indianapolis Flood Relief Fund to direct resources to Marion County.
At the Metamora grist mill, volunteers are distributing supplies to residents. Site interpreter Tara Ball noted the community's spirit, while resident Heather Wessel expressed determination to help the town rebuild.
Residents hope the popular tourist railroad will resume operations, encouraging visitors to return for Canal Days in early October as the town focuses on long-term recovery.
