India, Nepal ink new rail transit deal to boost multimodal trade, expand key corridors
The Letter of Exchange expands bulk cargo definitions and facilitates smoother transport from Kolkata and Visakhapatnam ports to Nepal's Morang Customs Yard, boosting regional trade.
- Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Nepal's Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies Anil Kumar Sinha interchanged a Letter of Exchange in New Delhi amending the Transit Protocol to enable direct rail freight between Jogbani and Biratnagar.
- Amid efforts to deepen connectivity, the meeting emphasised corridor liberalisation between key transit routes, reviewing Integrated Check Posts and infrastructure to strengthen Kolkata‑Jogbani, Kolkata‑Nautanwa, and Visakhapatnam‑Nautanwa corridors, the Ministry of Commerce & Industry said.
- The exchanged LoE enables direct rail links for containerised and bulk shipments between ports and Nepal Customs Yard, Morang District, allowing smoother movement from Kolkata and Visakhapatnam ports.
- The LoE positions the Jogbani–Biratnagar link to relieve logistical bottlenecks for Nepal's imports, strengthening multimodal trade corridors and boosting Nepal's trade with third countries as India is reaffirmed as Nepal's largest trade and investment partner.
- Since its joint inauguration on 1 June 2023, the Jogbani–Biratnagar rail link built with grant assistance from the Government of India has positioned officials to expand capacity through Integrated Check Posts and infrastructure upgrades, the Ministry said.
