India, Bhutan sign Rs 4,000 crore Line of Credit for energy projects during Jaishankar visit
- On Friday, September 18, 2026, India and Bhutan welcomed the signing of a concessional Line of Credit of INR 4,000 crore for energy projects during External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar's official visit to the country.
- The two sides reviewed energy cooperation, recalling the inauguration of the 1020 MW Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project and the resumption of dam construction for the 1200 MW Punatsangchhu-I Hydroelectric Project.
- Jaishankar and Bhutanese Foreign Affairs and External Trade Minister DN Dhungyel jointly inaugurated the 65-bedded Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Mother and Child Hospital, the Jaganathan Bridge, and the 500 kW Lunana Hydropower Project, transferring 54 electric vehicles and 43 Jersey cows.
- Ministers also celebrated the operationalization of a Unified Payments Interface -based digital payment facility enabling Bhutanese nationals to make payments in India, while reaffirming support for the King's vision for the Gelephu Mindfulness City .
- Appreciating the "special and multi-faceted India-Bhutan partnership," India thanked Bhutan for supporting its candidature for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for 2028–2029, while welcoming Bhutan's ratification of the Framework Agreement of the International Big Cat Alliance .
