Beloved Timberwolves Forward Joe Ingles Signs Contract to Play in Australia Next Year
The veteran Australian forward said leadership and family helped drive his return after 12 NBA seasons.
Australian basketball great Joe Ingles signed a two-year contract with Melbourne United after his Minnesota Timberwolves concluded their 12-year NBA career following playoff elimination last weekend.
Nearly 20 years after beginning his professional career with the now-defunct South Dragons, Ingles returns to Melbourne, citing desire to reconnect with family and friends after years playing abroad.
Fellow Boomers teammate Chris Goulding welcomed the signing, saying, "His decision-making, leadership and shooting abilities make him a great teammate and someone that everyone will love to play with."
Joining a Melbourne United team in transition, the 203cm veteran aims to elevate the roster after the club finished fifth in the 2025/26 season with a 20–13 record.
As a five-time Olympian, Ingles could eye a fifth FIBA World Cup appearance next year in Qatar, where new Boomers coach Adam Caporn will lead the national team.
