In the Rings: Rivalries, ratings and rule tweaks on the Grand Slam circuit
Organizers changed shootout scoring after the season opener drew 141,000 viewers on Saturday and 168,000 for Sunday’s final, according to Numeris.
Following the season-opening Grand Slam, organizers modified the shootout points structure to eliminate single points for teams that would have played an extra end without hammer.
The change follows a demonstrative matchup last month at the Co-op Invitational in Victoria between Team Casper and Team Manitoba-Dunstone, where their intense rivalry prompted rule discussions.
Sunday's final drew 168,000 viewers on CBC, while ESPN broadcasted the event in the United States via ESPNU but agreed with the league to withhold viewership numbers.
Colton Flasch, third on Team Tyler Tardi, supported the decision, stating, "They needed to do it and I think they got it right," while broadcaster Brad Gushue endorsed the modification.
The Curling Group recently secured an eight-figure investment from UNA Sports Group and added Molson Canadian as presenting partner for the five-stop circuit, expanding commercial operations.
