Statue of Liberty Marks 140th Birthday After 1886 Dedication in New York Harbor
The landmark’s restoration helped prevent a possible collapse and preserved its internal steel structure for future generations, officials said.
- Wednesday marked 140 years since the dedication of the Statue of Liberty, officially titled "Liberty Enlightening the World," which has anchored New York City as an iconic symbol of Franco-American alliance.
- President Grover Cleveland dedicated the 151-foot monument on October 28, 1886, as a gift from France to the United States honoring the alliance forged during the American Revolution.
- Peter Lehrer led the critical 1986 restoration, replacing 1,700 deteriorated steel bars inside Lady Liberty. "If this renovation hadn't been done, there was a possibility it could have been a catastrophic collapse," Lehrer said.
- The project held deep personal meaning for Lehrer, whose father immigrated from Germany in 1913. "When my father came to this country in 1913, that's the first thing he saw, was this statue," Lehrer said.
- About 12 million immigrants passed the Statue of Liberty en route to Ellis Island between 1894 and 1952, and visitors today can still climb hundreds of stairs to the crown, ensuring the landmark endures for future generations.
