Buccaneers Get Worse than Expected Timeline for Baker Mayfield's Injury Recovery
Undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels will make his first NFL start as Tampa Bay tries to cover a quarterback injury that could last up to six weeks.
On Sunday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers start rookie Jalon Daniels against the Green Bay Packers, with starting quarterback Baker Mayfield sidelined three to six weeks due to a dislocated right thumb.
Mayfield suffered the injury during the final two minutes of last week's 23-16 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, despite signing a three-year, $165 million contract extension earlier this year.
After going undrafted, Daniels earned the backup role and will be the first rookie UDFA to start since Tyson Bagent, with head coach Todd Bowles expecting him to "do his job and do it at a high level."
To bolster depth, Tampa Bay signed veteran Brett Rypien to the practice squad this week, while Easton Stick will serve as backup for today's game against the Packers.
Mayfield faces a recovery timeline of three to six weeks, though the Buccaneers face a quick turnaround visiting the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday night in Week 5.
