Imo NYSC Abduction: Police Locate Kidnappers' Camp, Say Location Mined With IEDs
Police say drones located the hideout, while heavy equipment is being prepared for a rescue after intelligence suggested the camp was mined with explosives.
On Wednesday, October 7, joint security forces rescued 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps members and one civilian in Imo State, transporting them to Owerri for medical assessment and care.
Gunmen seized the group on Tuesday, October 1, while traveling from Ibadan, Oyo State, to orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states, triggering widespread concern about insecurity along South-East travel routes.
Police Commissioner Audu Bosso stated drone surveillance located the hideout on Friday, but operations faced delays because the camp was mined with Improvised Explosive Devices , requiring bulldozers and armored vehicles.
Kidnappers demanded N50m per victim, placing immense financial and emotional pressure on families, though authorities warn that paying ransoms is illegal and fuels further abductions.
Following rescue, victims received medical care in Owerri, though authorities have not identified the attackers; the incident renewed calls for reforms to protect corps members posted nationwide for compulsory community service.
Nigerian authorities have safely rescued 20 recent graduates who were kidnapped by gunmen last week, following a large-scale search and rescue operation.
