Immigration Caps Passport Validity at 10 Years After Overseas Travel Issues

On Wednesday, August 12, the Malaysian Immigration Department suspended issuance of international passports with validity periods exceeding 10 years following check-in difficulties encountered by several travelers with overseas airlines.
Immigration Director-General Datuk Zakaria Shaaban stated the move aims to standardize PMA validity periods, addressing confusion over the additional six-month passport validity requirement that some airlines interpreted differently.
Over 60,000 upgraded passports have been issued since July 1, while the International Civil Aviation Organisation confirmed no international restrictions exist for passports valid over 10 years.
Existing PMA holders with passports exceeding 10 years will receive free replacement passports with maximum 10-year validity, and affected travelers will be given priority in the replacement process.
The suspension remains in effect until the department resolves the matter with international airlines, as officials emphasize their commitment to improving PMA implementation for smooth travel for all Malaysians.
