Immigrants from Ukraine, Sudan could soon lose protected status
More than 100,000 Ukrainians and about 2,000 Sudanese TPS holders could lose deportation protections if DHS lets the designations expire.
- On Monday, humanitarian protections for more than 100,000 Ukrainians and roughly 2,000 Sudanese immigrants are set to expire, but Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has not indicated whether he will renew them.
- A bipartisan group of 31 senators urged Mullin and Secretary of State Marco Rubio to grant an 18-month extension for Ukrainians, citing humanitarian crises and damage to critical civilian infrastructure left by the ongoing war.
- Republicans Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski joined Democrats in pressing for extensions for Sudanese nationals, citing ongoing armed conflict and human rights abuses that make safe return impossible.
- The Supreme Court determined that executive branch decisions regarding TPS designations cannot be challenged in court, leaving holders in a situation similar to 200,000 Salvadorians currently in limbo.
- Although Mullin is required to declare his decision at least 60 days before expiration, no announcement has been issued; if no action is taken by Monday, an automatic six-month extension kicks in.
