ICE agent charged with assault for hitting a fleeing man with his car will turn himself in on Monday
A grand jury charged the ICE agent with aggravated assault after surveillance video showed his unmarked SUV striking a fleeing construction worker.
A grand jury indicted ICE agent Mario Alberto Morales on Friday for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after he struck a man with his SUV; Morales will turn himself in on Monday, according to his attorney Lindenmuth.
On Oct 10, Morales struck 48-year-old construction worker Miguel Parra Hernandez with an unmarked SUV while chasing him through a Houston parking lot; Parra Hernandez told deputies Morales intentionally 'threw the car' at him.
Footage played by Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare on Friday shows Morales driving over a median to strike the fleeing man; Morales told deputies he did not brake, though he denied intentionally hitting him.
ICE officials stated the operation targeted Jose Mendoza-Cervantes, though his daughter told rights group FIEL that her father died nearly a decade ago; Parra Hernandez remains in federal custody while recovering from his injuries.
Morales, who unsuccessfully ran for Texas's 34th congressional district this year as 'Bam Morales,' is among a small number of federal agents criminally charged during the Trump administration's immigration crackdown; Lindenmuth previously dismissed the incident as 'clearly just an accident.
