- On Monday, prosecutors at the International Criminal Court asked for a life sentence for Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman, also known as Ali Kushayb, at The Hague, Netherlands.
- Years ago, rebels from Darfur's non-Arab communities rose up in 2003, prompting Sudan's then-government under Omar al-Bashir to mobilise Janjaweed militias in scorched-earth attacks.
- Last month, Abd–Al-Rahman was convicted of 27 counts including mass murder and rape, and Prosecutor Julian Nicholls said he ordered mass executions and bludgeoned two prisoners with an ax.
- The defence has asked for a much shorter term and credit for time served that could lead to release in months, and lawyers for Abd–Al-Rahman will present sentencing views later this week after ICC judges rejected the mistaken-identity defence.
