ICBC: Kids' commute to school and back riskiest part of their day
ICBC says minors are more than twice as likely to be in a collision during school commute periods, with September crashes 37% above average.
- On Wednesday, ICBC issued a warning to drivers across the province to slow down as students return to school, with minors more than twice as likely to be involved in collisions during commutes and risks rising 37% in September.
- Every year across the province, three children die and 365 are injured in crashes while walking or cycling; the Province has invested over $1.5 million since 2001 in traffic safety measures around schools to mitigate these dangers.
- BC Attorney General Niki Sharma emphasized that children's unpredictability around traffic requires drivers to remain extra cautious in school and playground zones, stating, "Working with ICBC and local communities, we're making the streets around schools safer for children."
- Minister of Education and Child Care Lisa Beare stressed that keeping students safe is a shared responsibility, reminding drivers to obey the 30 km/h speed limits in effect from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on school days.
- Caregivers should give children a road safety refresher before the school year begins, including teaching them to cross at marked intersections and stay focused on their surroundings while walking or cycling to school.
