'I think that's absolutely insane': Sophie Cunningham says Angel Reese deserved a technical foul
Cunningham said Reese should have been penalized for chasing Sabrina Ionescu and criticized inconsistent officiating after the Dream’s playoff win.
Ahead of Saturday's WNBA Finals, Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham criticized officiating on her No Hesitation podcast, arguing that Atlanta Dream forward Angel Reese should have received technical fouls for aggressive plays against the New York Liberty during the semifinals.
Cunningham described specific instances from the Dream's 85-83 Game 3 victory, including Reese chasing Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu, labeling these actions 'dangerous' and claiming they would be penalized during the regular season but escaped calls in the playoffs.
While praising Reese for 'having her teammates' back,' Cunningham criticized the inconsistent officiating, saying it is 'absolutely insane' that Reese avoided technicals for physical plays involving Liberty star Breanna Stewart and Marine Fauthoux.
Following a $500 fine for a separate technical against Jonquel Jones, Reese prepares for her first Finals appearance, leading the Dream into Game 1 against the Golden State Valkyries at Chase Center on Saturday.
Players and coaches continue to call for improvements in WNBA refereeing quality, as observers monitor how officials manage Reese's physical intensity during the remaining three games of the Dream WNBA Finals.
