PM Modi's 'Sun Rahe Ho Na Binod' Remark During Gujarat Event Has Audience in Splits
Commercial production has begun at the CG Semi facility as Modi says India is building a semiconductor cluster with downstream suppliers and startups.
On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the CG Semi Pvt. Ltd. Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test facility in Sanand, Gujarat, marking a major milestone for the India Semiconductor Mission.
The $870m plant represents a joint venture between CG Power and Industrial Solutions Ltd., Japan's Renesas Electronics, and Thailand's Stars Microelectronics; Modi noted the inauguration fulfills a vision he pursued for over 20 years.
Initially packaging 200 million chips annually, the facility will scale to 500 million, producing components for automotive, industrial, and 5G customers while creating around 5,000 direct and indirect jobs over five years.
Following Micron and Kaynes Semicon, this facility is the third to begin commercial production this year, as Modi called it a crucial step toward creating a self-reliant semiconductor cluster under "Make in India."
Government subsidies, including a $404m grant for CG Semi, support India's strategy to produce chips powering global industries while competing in the escalating race for semiconductor and technology supremacy.
During the inauguration of a semiconductor plant in Sanand, Gujarat, Narendra Modi delivered the now-viral dialogue, "Are you listening, Vinod?" in his speech. The audience, including those on stage, burst into laughter. He used this line to highlight the progress made in the country's indigenous semiconductor industry.
