'I got a mom!': 11-year-old adopted by his elementary school teacher
The adoption capped paperwork, background checks and longer visits as the boy became eligible only in May, according to Coombe.
On Wednesday, former Pathways Elementary School teacher Jackie Coombe officially adopted her former student, 11-year-old Jaden, following a two-year process in Volusia County.
Coombe first met Jaden in October 2023 while working as his substitute teacher, noting they "grew a lot and learned a lot from each other" during that year.
In the spring of 2024, Coombe learned Jaden was in the foster care system and began filling out necessary paperwork and background checks to pursue adoption.
Judge Joan Anthony presided over the hearing and congratulated the new family, while Jaden expressed his excitement with simple yet meaningful words: "I got a mom!"
According to the Department of Children and Families, there were more than 15,000 kids in the foster care system in Florida last year, underscoring the need for adoptive families.
