What Happens When A Quasar Hurls Gas “Bullets” At 30 % Light-Speed?
Have you ever imagined a cosmic storm so fierce that it flings whole blobs of gas at nearly a third of light-speed?Welcome, curious minds, to FreeAstroScience.com! Today, we dive into the wild heart of quasar PDS 456, where a supermassive black hole is staging an energetic fireworks show that even seasoned astronomers find jaw-dropping. Stick with us to the end, and you’ll see how these high-speed “bullets” could rewrite our understanding of how…
Hypervelocity stars reveal supermassive black hole in nearby galaxy
New Delhi: Astronomers precisely traced the paths of 21 stars on the fringes of the Milky Way. These stars are travelling too fast to be captured by the gravitational influence of the Milky Way or any of the galaxies in the neighbourhood. Tracing back the trajectories of these hypervelocity stars revealed that about half of the stars were kicked out by Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole occupying the core of the Milky Way. The other hal…
