India Rape Cases Turn Focus Back Onto Women's Safety
Lady Shri Ram College moved classes online for Wednesday, September 23, 2026, following the alleged rape of a 17-year-old at Aastha Kunj Park, located approximately 2 kilometres from the campus.
Police arrested three suspects—Asif, an onion wholesaler; Hemanth, an advocate; and Mukesh, a BSc student—for the Monday rape, where they allegedly used 'legal terminology to intimidate' the victim and her friend.
Tuesday's police encounter with a suspect occurred just 50 metres from the college's back gate, leaving students anxious; authorities confirmed all three men were arrested in connection with the attack.
The LSR Students' Union held an emergency meeting Tuesday night to demand stronger security, as around 2,000 students living in local paying guest accommodations fear traveling alone after the incident.
Principal Kanika L Ahuja said the college is coordinating with local police for increased patrolling and has strengthened CCTV surveillance to ensure student safety around the campus perimeter.
