Nepal Sets up Temporary Storage as Bodies Recovered Downstream Overwhelm Morgues
Authorities are preparing a 250-body temporary storage center in Bharatpur as 137 flood victims were recovered along the Chitwan stretch, officials said.
- Devastating flash floods from the Bhote Koshi river on Wednesday overwhelmed Nepal's hospitals, forcing authorities to establish temporary storage facilities in Chitwan to manage the influx of recovered victims.
- With 137 bodies recovered locally along the Trishuli and Narayani rivers, Chitwan Chief District Officer Ganesh Aryal announced Thursday an unused building in Bharatpur will be converted into a temporary mortuary.
- The new facility is expected to hold around 250 bodies, while existing morgues in Chitwan can accommodate only between 30 and 50 bodies combined, according to Aryal.
- Meanwhile, morgues in Pokhara are nearing capacity after receiving 93 bodies from surrounding districts; Kaski Chief District Officer Kuman Singh Gurung said, "By the numbers, we are already above capacity."
- Should identification efforts fail, officials plan to designate secure burial sites or utilize the electric crematorium at Devghat, as remains are preserved using temperature controls for a maximum of two weeks.
