Taipei, May 5 (CNA) A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck off the coast of Hualien County in eastern Taiwan at 6:53 p.m. on Monday, marking the second quake above magnitude 5 to hit the area within an hour, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA).

On the evening of May 5, Taiwan's Meteorological Administration said that Hualien County experienced 7 earthquakes within 1 hour, the strongest of which measured 5.9 magnitude.

The Meteorological Administration observed that from 6:09 pm today, Hualien experienced 7 earthquakes within an hour, including a magnitude 5.5 at 6:09 pm and a magnitude 5.9 at 6:53 pm, both with a maximum intensity of 4. The Meteorological Administration said that the magnitude 5.9 earthquake was the main shock and that aftershocks should be watched out for within 3 days.
