HSE warns of ambulance delays due to industrial action
Around 2,000 union members are set to strike over pay and modernisation changes after rejecting proposals backed by the Workplace Relations Commission.
Around 2,000 members of SIPTU and Unite began work-to-rule action on Monday, with a 24-hour strike set for Tuesday as the National Ambulance Service warns of significant service delays.
Unions cite the Health Service Executive's failure to implement the 2020 Roles and Responsibilities Review, which recommended enhanced pay scales reflecting the growing professionalisation of ambulance personnel.
Staff rejected proposals in September that included 3-14% pay improvements on top of a 9.25% increase under the public sector pay agreement, with 70% voting against the terms.
The Health Service Executive regrets the strike while remaining committed to resolution; the public is urged to contact 999 or 112 only for life-threatening emergencies as non-urgent calls face delays.
Further stoppages are planned later this month if the dispute remains unresolved, with strike action escalating to a 48-hour stoppage from May 19 and a 72-hour strike from May 26.
