ACM has formally applied for federal grant funding from the News Innovation Fund to launch Smart Newsrooms, an initiative designed to secure a sustainable future for regional journalism in Australia while combating unverified digital misinformation and AI-generated content.
In recent years, ACM has been forced to close unviable newspapers, leaving communities reliant on social media for information where misinformation spreads without editorial standards, deepening division and weakening trust.
If funded, the Smart Newsrooms project will reactivate 22 news websites and deploy 15 multimedia journalists to communities. The technology also powers a digital Noticeboard providing verified announcements for local businesses and groups.
ACM intends to make the technology platform available to independent regional and suburban publishers across Australia via a software subscription model, strengthening the entire industry and preserving media diversity.
Trusted local reporting remains crucial to safeguarding communities from toxic social media and AI-generated content. Success depends on continued support from digital subscribers, loyal readers, and advertising partners.
