UNITED STATES, AUG 7 – The August 2025 Sturgeon Moon peaks overnight Aug. 8-9 with a rare Venus-Neptune conjunction on Aug. 12, offering unique viewing opportunities for night sky watchers.
- The Sturgeon Moon will appear after sunset on Friday, August 8, 2025, and peak at 3:55 a.m. ET on August 9, remaining visible all weekend.
- The tradition stems from tribes near the Great Lakes calling August’s full moon the Sturgeon Moon, named after the giant lake sturgeon, a plentiful food staple caught in late summer.
- On Friday night, potential cloud coverage and Canadian wildfires may affect visibility and color of the moon shortly after moonrise, when it appears largest.
- On August 12, planets Venus and Neptune will share the sky near the moon in a planetary conjunction, with Venus visible to the naked eye and Neptune requiring binoculars or a telescope.
