How the evolution of Kevin O’Connell is helping the Vikings win
Following a shutout loss, Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell adopted a run-heavy offense, which proved effective in their Week 1 victory against the Packers.
On Sept. 13 at Bank Stadium, the Vikings defeated the Green Bay Packers 39-22 using a run-heavy strategy with 21 and 22 personnel packages roughly 40% of the time.
The philosophical shift traces back to last season's shutout loss in Seattle. After rookie Max Brosmer struggled in his debut, Connell committed to integrating a run-first identity by hiring assistant head coach Frank Smith.
Shotgun usage dropped from 58% in the first half to 28% in the second half. Jordan Mason secured an important 28-yard gain late that helped set up scoring position.
Defensive end Flores said, "I love it when we," regarding the running commitment. Left tackle Christian Darrisaw noted, "There a lot of things that we can do better to make it look better than it did."
Offensive coordinator Wes Phillips said, "It's ultimately about what we need to do to win the football game." The Vikings prioritize complementary play across all phases.
