As Pope Leo prepares to visit France, can its ‘Catholic moment’ become a lasting revival?
(RNS) — Record numbers of young people are seeking baptism in France. As Pope Leo arrives to greet 80,000 of them later this month, the country's diminished Catholic Church is faced with the challenge of turning the burst of enthusiasm into a lasting renewal.
The phenomenon, particularly among young men, emerged in France, the United States, but also in England, Ireland, Holland and Australia.
The Church has called for donations to cover the €27 million required for Pope Leo XIV's visit to France at the end of September. This budget finances the security and reception of 700,000 faithful in Paris, Lourdes and Metz
Pope Leo XIV will make his first visit to France from 25 to 28 September. A trip whose cost is expected to be substantial, while more than 700,000 people are already registered at the various rallies planned in four cities.
