Ukraine Destroys 2 Russian Su-34 Bomber Jets in Neptune Missile Strike on Airfield, Navy Says

The Navy said the Long Neptune also hit the base this month, as Ukraine seeks to weaken Russia’s tactical aviation fleet.

  • On Thursday, the Ukrainian Navy reported that Neptune missile strikes destroyed two Russian Su-34 fighter-bombers at the Marinovka airfield in Russia's Volgograd Oblast, based with the 11th Composite Aviation Regiment near Oktyabrsky.
  • The Su-34 serves as a primary platform for Russian tactical aviation to deploy guided aerial bombs against Ukrainian cities and Defense Forces positions, with strikes intended to reduce Moscow's ability to conduct combat operations.
  • Ukraine utilized the Long Neptune, an extended-range version of its Neptune missile capable of striking targets up to 1,000 kilometers away. The strike follows an October 15 attack on Borisoglebsk that destroyed four Russian Su-34M bomber-jets.
  • Russia has lost 43 Su-34 fighter-bombers since the full-scale invasion, with another seven damaged. Defense Intelligence Directorate officials said such losses require "a lengthy production cycle, substantial financial resources, and specialized industrial cooperation" to replace.
  • Despite these losses, Russia's Aerospace Forces currently operate approximately 140 Su-34 aircraft as of October 22, according to the Defense Intelligence Directorate. Moscow continues manufacturing and modernizing the fleet to sustain aerial operations against Ukraine.
