How Kansas City became a surprise World Cup hotspot
Argentina, England and the Netherlands chose the city as a base camp, and Visit KC expects 650,000 visitors during the tournament.
Kansas City, the smallest of the 11 U.S. host cities, secured base camp status for three top seeds: Argentina, England, and the Netherlands for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Aiming to shed its 1994 bid failure, the city has positioned itself as the "Soccer Capital of America" to attract major tournaments and global attention.
Superstar Lionel Messi and Argentina will train on the Kansas side and begin their title defense on June 16, while Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman called the city the "best option" after visiting in April.
Visit KC projects 650,000 visitors will descend on the city during the tournament, though an early May report from the American Hotel and Lodging Association noted hotel bookings are lagging behind expectations.
Local resident Camilla Thomas, 29, advised visitors to "come prepared" for the region's barbecue portions, warning they are larger than anything typically found in Europe.
