China wants to make more use of the Northern Sea Route, which runs through the Arctic along the Russian coast. Cargo ships have recently started sailing regularly along it towards Europe. The approximately 5,500-kilometer route could significantly speed up shipping and offer Beijing another way to reduce its dependence on the Suez and the Strait of Hormuz.
