How Buccaneers' Baker Mayfield Got Help From Tampa Bay Rays on Return From Thumb Injury
On Friday, Tampa Bay Buccaneers Head Coach Todd Bowles announced that quarterback Baker Mayfield is "ready to go" and expected to start Sunday against the Carolina Panthers after missing three games with a thumb injury.
Mayfield sustained the thumb injury during a 23-16 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sept. 27, forcing the 1-5 Buccaneers to rely on undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels for three games.
To protect his right hand, Mayfield will wear a custom glove created by Tampa Bay Rays clubhouse attendant Nick Bond; the quarterback signed a 3-year, $165 million contract extension this offseason.
While Mayfield returns, the Buccaneers will be without wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, right tackle Luke Goedeke, and safety Antoine Winfield, all ruled out for Sunday by Head Coach Bowles.
This contest against the Panthers marks the Buccaneers' first NFC South Division game, providing a critical opportunity for the 1-5 team to potentially save their season after a slow start.
