House Democrats will start their majority focused on boosting healthcare and ending the Iran war
The agenda aims to reverse Medicaid cuts, extend ACA subsidies and advance Iran legislation as Democrats seek to turn their House majority into wins.
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced early votes next year on boosting Medicaid and restoring enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies to lower the cost of living for Americans.
Medicaid enrollment dropped by about 5 million, or about 7%, since July 2025, according to KFF, as Democrats seek to reverse changes that imposed eligibility conditions and cut more than $900 billion over a decade.
With more than 250 members in the 435-member House, Democrats aim to translate election victories into policy achievements, including promises to stop the war with Iran and reverse some of President Donald Trump's trade tariffs.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune warned of gridlock, while Trump signaled opposition by posting "VETO" on social media; Democratic leader Chuck Schumer insists the party will push its agenda despite a 60-vote threshold in the Senate.
These early votes help frame policy choices for voters ahead of the 2028 presidential election, while groups like the Progressive Change Campaign Committee urge Democrats to prioritize removing the filibuster to bypass Senate gridlock.
